AutoCAD [Updated]

AutoCAD Architecture

The primary goal of AutoCAD is to make it easier for you to design, visualize, and analyze your engineering projects. To accomplish this goal, AutoCAD includes a powerful vector graphics editor, a multi-user graphics and plot area, two-way interaction between users and the software, and a complete feature set for modeling, engineering, and simulation.

The AutoCAD architecture is divided into different components, all of which work together to provide AutoCAD’s complete capability. In the following sections, you’ll see how AutoCAD’s components work and interact with each other, and how they influence how you use AutoCAD.

AutoCAD’s desktop—informally called the “drawing window” or “documents window”—consists of four windows: the status bar (a gray line that contains the AutoCAD application’s current status), the title bar (which shows the name of the current drawing), the plot area, and the status bar. The status bar includes the title of the current drawing, the AutoCAD version number, and the current user. In AutoCAD LT, the status bar also includes a message stating that there are other drawings open.

In the figure above, the drawing window is split horizontally to show the plot area on the left and the title bar on the right. You can close the plot area by clicking on the X at the upper right of the plot area or by clicking anywhere in the white space to the right of the title bar. You can close the title bar by clicking on the triangle at the lower right of the title bar.

Before the release of AutoCAD 2009, a command bar (an expandable bar at the bottom of the drawing window) contained options that you selected by clicking on the command or option buttons. The command bar is now called the system toolbar, and it contains items that you select by clicking on icons in the toolbar. Because the icons for most commands are now grayed out in the system toolbar, you’ll have to select the command using either the command line or the Quick Access toolbar.

The Quick Access toolbar contains the commands that are most frequently used and contains most of the commands for the following:

Ribbon commands that are accessible from the context menu of the ribbon’s component

Commands that are shared with other AutoCAD applications

Common commands

In addition to the menu items on the system toolbar, you can

What’s New in the?

While in AutoCAD, AutoCAD can read and interpret incoming markup and incorporate it automatically into the drawing. No additional steps are required to get your feedback into the drawing.

Markup Upload and Markup Assist has two new commands: Markup Import and Markup Assist. These commands are found in the top-right toolbar of the application.

Markup Import

Import and incorporate incoming feedback automatically into your design. To import a markup file, right-click in the drawing area and select Markup Import.

When AutoCAD prompts you to choose a file, select the file and AutoCAD automatically imports the information and displays it.

Markup Assist

While in AutoCAD, you can work on designs and receive feedback from other users instantly. Any edits you make to the drawing appear immediately in your design. To incorporate feedback into your drawings, right-click in the drawing area and select Markup Assist.

While in Markup Assist, you can import feedback from other users directly into your design. Right-click in the drawing area and select Markup Import.

New command: Markup Upload

In addition to Markup Assist and Markup Import, AutoCAD now includes the new Markup Upload command. Markup Upload offers two useful options for users:

To send and receive feedback instantly, the Markup Upload command enables the automatic import and export of feedback from other users. The second option – the Asynchronous Markup Upload – is a more robust version of the standard synchronous Markup Upload.

The Asynchronous Markup Upload command enables you to import feedback directly into your drawing without first having to send it to the user who sent it.

To import feedback, right-click in the drawing area and select Markup Upload. Select the user you want to import feedback from from the menu and select Asynchronous Markup Upload.

In addition, when the Asynchronous Markup Upload command is selected, any feedback you receive in the future will automatically be imported into your drawings.

Converting Models:

Convert a file with options to a new file with no options. Converts a drawing with options to a new drawing with no options (same as the Convert command). The Convert As New option does not create a new drawing. It creates a new file that has no options and you can open or save it as you would any other file.
